Signs your refrigerator needs a technician

A fridge runs around the clock and rarely stops without warning — it usually gives signals first. Learn them so you can call a technician before food spoils.

Unlike most appliances, a refrigerator is never switched off. Its faults usually develop gradually, and noticing a change early can save your food and spare the compressor extra strain.

Signs worth paying attention to

  • Drinks and food are less cold than usual, or food spoils faster.
  • A thick layer of ice on the freezer walls — especially on No Frost models, which shouldn't build up ice.
  • Water under the crisper drawers or a puddle in front of the fridge.
  • A loud constant hum, or a new grinding or knocking sound.
  • The compressor runs for very long periods without stopping.

Normal sounds that aren't a worry

Not every sound is a fault. A faint flow of refrigerant, a light click when the compressor starts or stops, or a quiet fan are all normal in most fridges. What deserves attention is a new, loud or constant noise.

Before you request a technician

Check the socket has power and the doors close tightly — a worn door seal lets warm air in and causes both weak cooling and ice build-up. Then note what you noticed and when it started, and send it with your request.

If the fridge stops completely, keep the doors closed as much as possible until the technician arrives, to keep food cold for as long as possible.
